If they are afraid of having their belongings stolen I would tell them to purchase a personal lockbox or safe. You can find them at Wal-mart , Lowes , or Home Depot for about $90.00 for a 2 cubic ft. model, or $20-30, for a lockbox. Plus carry renters ins. for about $10 per mo.

I agree with earlier comments - this is likely an indication that they are having parties with frequent and unknown guests at parties in the house, etc. I have a beautiful place with bedroom locks and one of the guys had a safe. They just kicked down the door and stole the safe. Despite my requests they never even locked the main house entry doors. Some kids don't always think things like this through very carefully. I learned to become very sensitive to requests like this and look for other underlying cues of increased risk.
