why would the landlord care? I'm on the original lease, not him.

    I was thinking you would want to talk to the landlord because he is the one who issued the lease and he the person who holds considerable discretion over what will happen during the term of the lease. He is also uniquely qualified to explain the terms of the lease and the requirements of your state's law for your situation. But I can see you are too smart to talk to the landlord.
