Some states require more than a 30 day notice to terminate a month to month lease (Georgia is one of these; landlords must provide a 60 day notice). In addition, many states require that such notice be in writing.

However, no judge is going to grant you the ability to live rent free in a unit just so you can save up money for the next rental.
