Help! What is high-pitched whistle in wall??? by Kelly on November 13, 2009 @17:04
Last week our tenants in our 100+ year old building complained of an intermittent rumbling noise. My husband checked it out and found the bathroom pipes were vibrating, but almost all the old pipes in that apartment were replaced with pex 6 months ago.

NOW the rumble has progressed to a high-pitched whistle, almost like a sustained smoke alarm beep. It's no longer rumbling, just whistling. We shut off the steam boiler for 4 hours, no change. We shut off the water and drained some out, no change. We cut the electricity, no change. We checked all 6 apartments and found no source for the noise. What the heck is this??? Our next step is an exorcist!

It sounds like you have a steam leak somewhere.

Has anyone ever died in the building? Ghosts are common in older homes due to magnetic points of elements and their sometime varied velocities of implosion and expulsions.

if you have depressurized the boiler (not just shut it off), shut off electricity, shut off water (including emptying the pipes & toilets), then it could be:

1) wind: is the sound any better or worse on windy days?

2) air movement inside the walls, such as when the unit is heated and air is escaping

3) sounds made by the building heating and cooling at different times in the day: we had this with a skylight, made a whistling sound in the morning as the air in the partially sealed skylight warmed and escaped. It can also be wood creaking.

4) something outside: sound can carry in funny ways, sometimes from surprisingly far away

my guess is either wind, or heating/cooling of the building

I have the same problem. I can hear it from the first floor but they can't hear it on the 3rd. I think it only happens when someone turns on a faucet. I haven't found the problem yet but it definitely has to do with the water pipes.
