People's Court by Anonymous on November 17, 2009 @18:24
I watched People Court today.

The judge awarded the landlord full replacement cost of new carpet. Never ask nor mentioned anything about the age of the previous carpet. It looked cleanish from the photos but it has pet urine smell.

Peoples Court and the other TV court shows do a lot of things that housing court doesn't. E.g. they accept letters and affidavits as evidence. When I was in court with my tenant-from-hell, the judge refused a notarized letter from my plumber. Judge said he couldn't cross examine a letter.

What I have noticed from these TV court shows is there is no real consistency. Sometimes People's Court will not accept letters, sometimes she does. Sometimes she will award full cost of replacing an item, sometimes she will pro-rate.

I really would not put too much faith in them. It's whatever makes good television.

You do realize that most of the time these are not real judges... not even lawyers. It's like that new phone ad with the loggers running the family court. It's entertainment, not law.

People's court is not actual court, it's an arbitration.

My daughters had filed a small claim against a friend/roomate a few years ago, and they received a letter from one of those TV court shows asking them to bring their case to them. They were going to but the defendants dads shot it down and hired her a lawyer to fight it here.
