rental increase by Mary (North Dakota) on February 8, 2010 @14:53
I'm on a fixed income and my rent went up. How do I afford this? The apartment isn't worth what they want me to pay and is in need of updating.

maybe you might want to consider moving.

landlord expenses go up, therefore tenant rents go up.

If you can't afford it, then you should move. Find cheaper rent place.

If you feel you are being asked to pay more than the property is worth, look for a less expensive rent. Rents go up when taxes, insurance or adjustable rates on mortgages go up -- that's where your rent money goes once you hand it over to the LL. And older properties may be more expensive because they require more repairs. Just hand in your 60-day notice and move along -- you'll be happier and so will your LL.

As a rule, Tenants ALWAYS feel they are paying too much even when they are paying below market!

If you are a tenant who feels he or she is being over charged,
1. Ask yourself WHY you rented there in the first place.

2. Try to find a better deal and decide if it is worth it to move.

3. Ask your landlord to lower the rent.
