I have seen all kinds of bad information on credit reports.
You have to get a form from each of the 3 credit reporting agencies..and fill out and mail the form. They then have 30 days to respond. If they require more info, you may have to get a copy of the real document from the county clerk as well as all the information for the company that did the reporting.
Then, send a copy of all you documentation and a copy of the correspondance from the reporting agencies to the offending company. The have 30 days to respond. Once you get the issue resolved with them, send copies of the entire thing back to the 2 credit reporting agencies...they get another 30 days to respond.
If you do not get it fixed after completing this process and waiting the final 30 days...then you can file in Federal Court against the reporting agencies for not fix it.
This is the process outlined by the FTC. If you do not follow this proceedure (you can get a copy of the proceedure at FTC.ORG)...then they can ignore you till you do.
FUN..eh?
I would also put the screws to the company that got it wrong...this is defamation of character.
(I just went thru this over $1 in late fee for an account that was closed).
