Tree Removal

In front of my rental house used to be a large mesquite tree. Two days ago, the tree fell down due to the heavy weight of the tree angle. However, it was growing so low to the ground it was never a threat. Anyway, because the top fell into the street and sidewalk, the renters cut it up. And they continued to chop the entire tree. Then, they gave it away to the people that helped. The renters never notified us about this. This would have been great bbq wood to sell for another tree, or simply divide it among my family. The wood could have filled up a large pickup truck or more. Should I have them pay for this?

Are the Ts responsible for lawn mowing and such?

Yes, but there is no more grass because they have never watered it! But that's another story.

Did you want to spend all day choping and hauling wood? Or, did you want the tenants to do work and deliver the wood to you? Should you make them pay for it? No, there has to be a limit to how cheap a landlord can be. By having a free tree removal, you have reached your limit.

What does your lease say regarding responsibility of trees and bushes?

We would have done it ourselves. We do not like renters repairing or doing anything that landlords are responsible for without consulting us first ex.ac, sewer etc. To take it off the curb and away from the street is one thing, but to chop up the entire tree and give it away without even a phone call! They don't even mow the lawn! What's the motivation here? Like I said, I could have sold it to buy a new tree.

"What was the motivation?"
The motivation was to remove the tree from the street and sidewalk at no cost to you. It was a pickup load. You act like they took enough wood to build a house. Thank your tenants for the free tree removal and haul away. Move on with your life and stop acting like you got robbed.

You should be thankful the tenants removed it. You could have been fine by city/county for blocking street/sidewalk. Your neighbors are also glad it has been removed also as it was a danger to children. Send them a thank you note as the least.

If you have tenants that are nice enough to cut up a tree then be thankful and don't complain! Yes, they should have notified you before doing anything but they probably thought they were being nice and now you want to punish them. Just tell them that next time something like that occurs please contact you first. I doubt a judge would grant you the money if it went to court anyhow. It isn't like they chopped the tree down.

Thank you all for your blunt and honest answers. Although I disagree with some, I can say that the bottom line was they did me a huge favor. So, I spoke with the tenants and thanked them for their hard work and swift action.
