Maybe so, but if there is adequate lighting and locks and so forth I doubt that the landlord can be held liable for crimes. Certainly not for crimes that are not on the property. Further the original poster did not indicate that they were the victim of a crime merely that they were now afraid of the crime in the area. They should have checked with the local police department if they were unsure of the crime in the area before signing the lease. In short if they want to move they either walk away and pay the price for that OR the better choice is to work out an agreement with the land lord.
