I would tip him, he is running from an obligation in another state. Eviction is a totally separate process, in the court system of my state. You can continue with the eviction, his wife can show up for the eviction if he is detained elsewhere, for whatever reason.
No, the wife does not get to stay longer, at least not in my state. But my state is landlord friendly. No pay, the court system says you do not stay.
