Fell behind. What do I do? by Anonymous on March 2, 2012 @00:37

I am renting an apartment with my husband unfortunately he has left me and I cant pay for the rent which is now $2729 it was $1900 as I couldn't pay for this month I have incurred fees. The landlord wants me to pay this months rent and fees then I have my rent coming up on the 12th march I cant afford to pay for all of this and just getting deeper into dept. What can I do? I'm guessing this will ruin my clean credit and I wont be able to rent anywhere else. Both our names are on the contract only his social number is in the documents as I didn't have one at the time being English. How long will I have until I get kicked out and can I buy myself any time to try and rent else where. I really hate having to default as I really got on well with the staff and the company. They really didn't deserve this but it is out of my control and I have know one to turn to for help. I would really appreciate your advice thank you.

What can you do? Find someplace you can afford and move.

Effects on your credit will not improve by staying and getting farther into debt.

The length of time before you are set to curb depends upon where you live, but you can expect that somewhere around 3 days after the courts granting the FED, that you will be homeless.

Try finding a much cheaper lace now. If they have not filed papers on you for eviction the new place won't see it on your credit yet. Give notice now and offer to move out sooner than 30 days if you can since you can't pay. Once on your feet pay the place back what you owe. If you do that they may not sue you but odds are they will.

No it is not out of your control. If you let this go to eviction, and you are but days away, if that, you WILL ruin your credit.

I would get out while the getting is good. Like over the weekend, quick and quiet. Leave the keys with the manager. Try to keep your social security out of it. You both will probably get sued, but if you leave quick and leave it clean and forfeit the deposit you might not.

Put your stuff in storage and move into a motel temporarily or a shelter if you must. By staying without paying you are STEALING from the landlord and hurting their ability to pay THEIR bills.

This exact situation is why there are so many problems between landlords and tenants. Sorry, but you are not entitled to a free place to live unless you camp in a tent on public lands (which I have done myself when down on my luck). Do the right and honest thing and vacate the property immediately.
