"The greatest contempt you can heap on him is to pay the bill... and walk away in quiet disgust."

I don't get it. A deadbeat pays the rent he owes and this heaps shame on the landlord?

We don't know the full story. These two obviously had some kind of prior social relationship. Whatever promises were made, whatever expectations were created, who really knows. All I'm saying to the tenant in this case (without judging him as a "deadbeat") is that on first glance, his case appears legally questionable. The downside of going to court and fighting, is simply not worth the potential risk. If there were some additional factors at play here (alluded to by the poster), and IF the landlord is being in some way unfair (unproven) then the best recourse for the aggrieved tenant (aggrieved in their eyes) is still to pay up and move on.

We do know the tenant stopped paying rent to fund his move.

What "rest of the story"? The OP had a tenancy at will, the landlord terminated this; OP continued to live in the rental unit for two more months, failing to pay his rent.

What is wrong with you with the disgust comment? How is the landlord being unfair taking him to court for these two months of owed rent?
