As part of the rent, your tenant has a right to expect a certain amount of privacy in the common areas as well.

The cameras were not there when the tenant took occupancy, you did not get the tenant's approval to install the cameras in a common area, and you most definitely have violated your tenant's rights unless you have a prior agreement with the tenant allowing you install the cameras for some purpose.

I would file a complaint against you if I were your tenant, and I hope your tenant does.

You gave a thirty day notice, and you should just wait the 30 days and hope the tenant doesn't harm the property.

Your actions appear retaliatory, vengeful and childish. Trust me when I tell you a judge will nail you to the wall. I work in real estate law.

Anonymous, I do not believe you : Tenant did not rent the common area, he rented the apartment. LL has the right to protect the people living in his building, he installed a camera for their safety, as far as the camera does not affect the T privacy.

Also : Tenant threatening to sue LL is BS : with a past of violence and a lot of bad behavior, he/she will not sue you

Get rid of him/her asap.

I think this would be a tough call. It appears that the tenant rented a bedroom, not a unit and that the cameras are set up on interior apartment doors as opposed to hallways and common main entrances to apartment buildings. Since a bedroom in itself isn't a self sustained unit, I would expect some sort of privacy for the main living areas of the remainder of the unit as it is still (although commonly used) a part of the residence being rented.

There are entirely too many home schooled, homeless tenants posting here.
