Violent Tenants?

I am dealing with a tenant who has previously had a restraining order against him (don't know the details though). They have moved out and I am trying to collect unpaid rent from them. I am afraid they will turn violent and put my family in danger. Am I just having irrational thoughts and over-thinking things? What should I do? Have you ever encountered a violent tenant?

Your making a whole lot of assumptions based on a restraining order that you don't know the details of.
We could be here all day speculating. But I'd rather not waste my time.

Landlord should only be concerned that the proper legal paperwork is in order. Issue the "Pay or Quit Notice" in accordance with your state law. File for court ordered eviction proceedings for non-payment of rent.
If the tenant has moved, presumably landlord has a security deposit to cover the unpaid last month's rent. If none of the above has been done, good luck ... courts do not like unprofessional landlord complaints about tenants who fail to pay rent, when landlord fails to collect rent or follow proper proceedings.
So what if the tenant is potentially violent! Landlord should have screen for these issues prior to rental.

"I am dealing with a tenant who has previously had a restraining order against him" Why did you rent to a violent tenant to start with? You did know this fact from a background check?

I thought about this for a few minutes, and reasonably I don't think anyone can provide you with a satisfactory response, nor would we want to. It would be risky advice. If you're that concerned about it, then find out more information about your x-tenant.

Restraining Orders are not necessarily bad. It should not affect your decision to collect any money.

You are overthinking things. Base your decision on the details. Find out what the restrainng order was over. An ex-girlfriends complaint. Or a relative that wanted him out? Or a drunken, violent episode? I would take the time and talk to the person that filed the restraining order. Their name should be on the report. Proceed from the knowledge of how violent this person has been, and how recently he has been violent.
