warning before the court date

landlord sent a warning notice tp me to pay $399.80 before this Friday, 3/15/2012, and attorney has been ccontacted to schedule court date!
Last month, landlord wanted $2xx.xx and has not been able to itemize what are included in $2xx.xx.
Last year, I have provided copies of my payments from the first month to landlord via certificate mail by the post office after I noticed the extra dollars I had pre-paid for utilities were disappeared from my account and after I informed landlord via emails to correct or explain but received no responses.
Tonight, the lease office wants to talk to me. I have full-time job and suggest to setup an appointment for 1 ~ 3 hour meeting to see how landlord comes up $399.80.
Anyway, all the rent and utilites have been paid on time. Landlord never provides the receipt even I ask for it, never explains where the balance of my pre-paid went even I ask about it.
Can landlord add new charge / fee for the past (in this $399.80 past due) if they do not provide the receipts for the past and do not provide the billing for the past?
And even the landlord provide the receipts NOW for the past (Aug 2011 ~ march 2012), do they have the right to ask the tenent to pay $399.80?
If yes, then landlord can always go to the tenant to pay the items they made up for. It does not sound right.

I am wondering why you don't have proof of payment.
When you write a check..the cancelled check is your receipt. When you get a money order..the stub is your receipt.
Why would you hand over cash without a receipt...it's easy to do..you just say, "OK, I'll wait until you find some paper to write the receipt on".
So..I do not think the landlord has to prove you didn't pay it (impossible to prove a negative)..you have to prove you did.

any charge / fee are not listed on my rental lease, I think I can say "no" to LL that I am not responsible to pay.
Can I tell LL that
(1) LL did not provide the billing statement or the billing statement did not mention that items, so I am not responsible?
(2) Can LL go back to 2011 and want me to pay some fees/charges?
