which page do I need from tax return and then after I have that info is there a way for me to verify they are self employed still and not just saying they are when they actually are unemployed. Just want to cover bases for the BS'ers ya know.

You are correct that the "self employed" are another version of unemployed. Just like a renter is another version of homeless. You are wasting your time looking at tax form copies. Anyone can make them up and software exist everywhere to alter copies.

if they are truly self-employed they should probably have a website. you could ask them for that information.
and yes, ta returns can be falsified but you can run their credit report through the system and see what comes up - a good self-employed person will have good credit.
you could aslo ask for several references to their business, and verify that those references are not just family or friends.

for someone to say that self employed and unemployed are the same is just ridiculous.

If they are truly self employed, like I am, you know what people need & want regarding your finances. My state doesn't require a business license but a lot of states do. Self employed know they need to supply tax returns and a signed 4506. They know they need to submit bank statements. They know people want, and the successfully self employed get it because it makes life easier, a P& L from a CPA.

All that said, if they're a "cash business" kind of family, there isn't much of a paper trail..
