ask for marriage certificate
Passport-and this is how you get married in US to US citizen -having your alien Passport and for time you are waiting for permit to work this is your ID.
ask for USCIS Petition which is connected to the labor dept application for SSN .SSN comes always first with permit to work-now this become yor ID to time you will get GC.It takes dependent on state -NY it is about 2 years,but in Pa only 6 months.Maryland is not overcrowd so it should take about same time.
Jake yours advises on this forum are great!You are always catching the point but at this time you seem like you do not like immigrants -so i do those illegal.But it this point if she has a proof of good cause i cannot any problem since i had tenants in similar situation ,they where great,we are friends and know we are doing party in their own home.She stays home with kids.Most immigrants will appreciate a chance they got here even this country is not anymore Milk and honey.I am one of those.And believe me i was discriminated many times....

"but at this time you seem like you do not like immigrants" I do not like immigrants? I have been married to an immigrant since 1995. The in-laws are here now. The come every year to live with me for six months to keep their green card good. I know all about immigrants. And, I know this...to get married in this country you must produce a birth cirtificate. This woman does not have one. Nor has she produced a passport or marriage certificate from any other country. She has absolutely no ID. "She stays home with kids." She will have to stay indoors. The "wife" can not be caught outside the house. If this woman did not make a legal entry into the country with a passport and visa, she can not obtain a green card or citizenship. Until she produces the passport, she has no legal name to show the landlord. Don't you know already that 3/4's of a landlord's applicants claim to be married when in fact they are not...at least married to each other anyway.

Never thought id say this, but i totally agree with Jake. I have several employees that say they are "married", but i know for a fact that, legally, they are not. Keep asking for the documents for proof of who she is exactly as you would for anyone else.

Angi, you are staing your stating your inexperience which will get you in big $$ trouble in the future. Get this: there is no doubt that renting to (harboring) an illegal alien is a BAD idea. Since you have no way of checking their background, you could possibly add harboring a fugitive (criminal) to the list of bad outcomes. There are about 14 MILLION illegal aliens in the US now. Beacuse these 14 million people "need a chance" are you going to offer housing to all of them because they need a break? Are you running a charity or a business? I submit that if you become friends and party with your tenants, and rent to illegals, you will be out of business soon. Good luck.

Thanks for advise...i really appreciate I said passport i said marriage cert and i said copy of petition...And i said i do not like illegals....What means i would not rent or advise to rent apt to them what i mean is CHECK FIRST JUDGE LATER ;)

Jake because they believe so ;) In my mother's country people do not stay for US visa anymore in long long lines...They are opening businesses in own country or go for labor to France,or England or Germany and the worse choice is Italy and Austria ;)Or open business in Germany(best choice)When European Docs was working us a HHA in USA they are getting top salary in Europe. And this is sad because my mother's country produce ones of bests specialist in the word.. at least they are not bought by pharmaceutical companies. But this is different story and not for this forum ;).We have to face a situation...we are no more MILK and HONEY.We were sold to China ;) But you are right Jake illegals should be stopped
