Do not do anything before you get more advice from this forum. What state are you in? Some states allow a landlord to seize a tenant's property for rent owed.

This is in MA. I have not sent them anything about the security deposit yet.

    You need to get a reconcilation statement out immediately about the deposit less damages, repairs and cleaning. If your state allows, you may also apply the deposit toward unpaid rent. And, if your state allows, you may seize the appliances for any balance due.
