No NO and NO do not ever let somebody do work on your house no matter what. They can actually sue you later for not paying them a fair wage for their work. I had an ex tenant try to sue me on this issue........its in limbo until he gets out of jail (yeah I know...lmao). But my lawyer says its not as cut and dry and it might seem.
