Plaster will generally be built before 1978, which means you have a lead paint issue. Depending on your state, it could be VERY bad in terms of cost to mitigate.

Either way, removing plaster in a pre 1978 home requires a lead paint certification

Plaster between the 1940s and early 1980s (some say 81, others 86) may contain asbestos also.
