i filed complaint, got inspected, now want us out

my mother has been renting an apartment in a now coop building since 2001 and i have been living with her since. My mother has paid her rent on time every month. Last year i filed a complaint to the city because they wasnt repairing anything and we had terrible leaks and peeling paint. The apartment got tested and came up positive for lead. February 2012 they send a notice stating they will not be renewing the lease due to conditions of the apartment and the apartment must be vacant by may 11 2012. It is now may 2 and I still haven't been able to find an apartment. Is there a way that I can extend the moving date? I now have 2 kids aged 7 an 2 and am worried about having to leave with no apartment to move to. Is there anyway I can fight it? There is no eviction status just a notice that was mailed stating no lease renewal and a date when we had to move out.

Good job in filing the original complaint to the city. Now you have caused yourself to have to move out. Since you supposedly have lead paint why would you want your kids to continue to be exposed to it? You have had two months to move. Maybe you can go to a shelter until you find a new apartment. Good luck.

Because lead paint coupled with serious leaks and peeling paint is a very serious and dangerous health hazard, you will not be able to live there any longer. Most likely it is a city mandate that you move. The building cannot be fixed unless it is vacant at this point because the damage is extensive and the debris that will be in the air will be significant and full of toxic and contaminated dust as they remove the lead paint. Your children will be in great danger of getting very very sick if exposed to it. Water will probably be an issue as well. The building will not push back their entire plan to correct the problems, keep contractors on hold and rack up more and more city fines until you find a new apartment. They gave you 2 months. Contact the housing authority. They will be able to guide you through the system to find affordable housing. Ask relatives or friends to help you out. Right now you have to find a place to stay and not be as picky as to what extra options the apartment needs to have. You might have to settle for a place farther away or no laundry room or is a walk-up.
One thing is for sure, if you don't move out, the building will evict you and will win because of the hazardous conditions that ironically, you reported to the city. That will make it even harder for you to find a rental with that on your record.

Way to go, gal. The LL is NOT retaliating so don't even think to go down that road--he is making sure you and your family are safe by getting you out of the place because the lead paint came to his attention.
You've received a legal non-renewal notice. NO you cannot extend the moving date, are you kidding? After you've endeared yourself to the LL and are endangering your children?
If you "fight it" and stay, you'll get an quick eviction judgement on your record, most likely. This will follow you forever.
You were notified in FEBRUARY of THIS YEAR that your lease was up, and yet you have not found another place???? Get busy, woman!!! Find a place for you and your mom and your two kids.

You can't have it both ways. You basically got the apt condemned. Work like that requires time, money and permits. This cannot be done with a tenant in the place. Hop on Craigslist and find a new place to live!
