Re: code enforcement

I have this continual problem with one tenant. I've probably been served w/unregistered vehicle letters 10 times during the past 8 years. I usually call them up and tell them about it and give them the date to remove the vehicle before I am fined. I then am wasting my time driving past to be sure they comply - they always do but it's last minute. I received a letter again a few months ago. I decided I wasn't calling them - they knew they weren't to have it there and they had been warned repeatedly. I called a tow company and it was gone within an hour. They came home, called the police to report the vehicle stolen. Police told them who had towed it. It cost them $400 to get it back. I'm guessing I'll never receive a violation notice again for an unregistered/inspected vehicle.

It was not fair to tow the tenant's car without warning. He always complied with the request to move the vehicle and never cost the landlord money. Now you have a tenant brewing about how to get even. You can not cost the tenant $400 and not expect it to cost the landlord something.

Unregistered vehicle letters are both posted on the front door of the property and mailed to the owner of record, so the tenant is not without warning that they are about to have trouble. Personally I wouldn't bother with notifying tenant about violation, I would just bill them for the fine received, plus administrative costs. Too bad, so sad.
