You'll probably discover that the original plat of the subdivision included language that commits every buyer to membership in and conformation to the HOA. Every deed thereafter refers to the property by Lot & Block & Subdivision name, "in accordance with the recorded plat" which is the language that obligates you to the HOA. If they wanted to be hardasses, they could force you to adhere to the rules, but it sounds like you got off easy with a decent HOA leadership. Furthermore, it doesn't have to be recited in your deed, because the plat is a public record and you have the opportunity to discover it, so you are credited with the knowledge whether you have it or not.
