My guess is he is not doing this to just scare you. He is doing this to get the rent paid. He gave you a pay or quit notice, that informs you that you are going to be evicted should the rent not be paid. If you doubt the legality of a pay or quit notice, call the courthouse and have someone explain to you what a pay or quit notice means.
