If rent is due in advance on the 1st, later after the 5th. Today is the 2nd, can I serve a pay or quit now or wait until the 6th?

Yes it is late. Being late and having to pay late fees are different things.

Serve the notice immediately by posting it on the door and mail another by receipted certified mail on monday.
