They did not withhold rent in that manner. They just did not pay citing financial difficulties and have not brought up the issue of rent paid during displacement 2 years ago till they lawyered up.

There you go... Hopefully they cited their financial difficulties in writing? That is their real reason for not paying...no money.

Then how does the lawyer expect to be paid? There must be some money some where.

He's doing it pro-bono. Not sure if he's expecting to make money or compel us to settle on better terms.
