Honestly, it's really a simple combination of everything that's been said.

There are a number of things that can go through a landlord's head. First off, the comment shouldn't have been made. Regardless, a few things would go through my mind as a landlord. It would not be that there would be more wear and tear on the apartment, as a tenant rents the apartment for use over a whole month, whether they are at work 8 hours a day or not, but rather any implications that working at home might have.

Such as, is the tenant starting a home business in my rental. Is the tenant's employer downsizing to save money (possibly layoff coming). Is the tenant being honest or did they actually lose their full time job.

It's really any number of things. Personally, it wouldn't matter to me if a tenant teleworked as a prospective tenant, so long as everything could be verified (employment and income).
