Bad Neighbors-barely speak English, Kid Damages? by Anonymous (NY) on June 5, 2012 @11:31

In NY State. Two times now one of my neighbors kids have pulled out my Satellite cable attached to our house on their driveway side within the last 6 months and I had to pay $150 to hire a dish guy to fix it and get our cable back, among other types of damages to our property. The last time the neighbors kids pulled off our Dish Cables, they also pulled out our tenants. I had to pay for our own tenants Dish cables to be fixed too. Now our tenant no longer has cable for us to worry about the kids next door damaging.

My neighbors next door have many kids, about 8 or 9 kids that are always outside when not in school. It appears no one is supervising them most of the time. I have witnessed their kids jumping up and down on cars like a trampoline without regard for any damages and ruining anything they can get their hands on. One weekend the Dad bought each one a brand new bike. By evening time each bike was in pieces and strewn all over their property. They are renters and come from Africa. They speak a little English.

I have tried to speak to the parents about it nicely, but that did not seem to make a difference. They DID seem to understand most of what I said. I had emailed their Property Manager but now that I am no longer useful to him, he does not care. That property used to be vacant and I would cut the grass, bushes, etc., and watch over it for free for the Property Manager. I did not want their vacant property to draw crime to us or our property. I live in one apartment in the house I own and rent another apartment in the same unit out. I make sure my tenant does not bother anyone else, but I don't know how to protect her in return from the neighbors kids causing her trouble?

I personally stopped two different criminals in the act of trying to break in when that house next door was vacant, and the manager was aware of all we did that helped that property and his job, even taking care of the grass, shrubs and etc. when he would not do it. The owner of the property is from England, no known address.

Any ideas of what I can do to try to stop these damages from occurring again by these kids next to us and get the parents (renters next door) to pay for their kids actions? Also what do you do if you don’t know the offenders name if you want to send a registered notice by mail?

Call social services and report the children not being supervised and seem to be neglected.

Call the police when you seem destroying property, either yours or other such as cars. Install discreet survaillence cameras, once that don't actually look like cameras, or out of reach of children around that side of your property. Catch the little heathens in the act. Show the authorities to get a police report.

Report to the cable companies that their equipment is being constantly destroyed by vandals. It may not lead to anything but at least you have it on record.

By pass the property manager and get the name and address of property owner. Your town may require that the owners register with city hall since they do no live on site.

Send registered letter to property manager/owner about the incidents along with copies of any police reports. If you have a lawyer friend that is willing to do you a favor, have him/her write it for you preferably on letterhead from their law firm to add impact to how serious you are to it.

Take footage and reports and sue in small claims court. Investigate to see if you can hold the property manager/owner liable for the tenants actions.

Call the police. Make a police report of the damages. Get a copy and give it to Child Protective Services. Tell them that the children are out all day vandalizing the neighborhood property. Explain that you believe no adults are home much of the day. These actions will get the attention you require. Call the police every time you see vandalism and renotify the CPS. Eventually, the parents will get the message.

File a police report about the unlawful trespass and property damage.
After three documented complaints (evidenced by the police), the police are required to take action. Maintain record of the police reports and the multiple property damage repairs (receipts for satellite). Take dated photographs for document and evidence the damage. Armed with the police reports, property damage receipts, and photographs sue the tenants, landlord and property management company.

The language barrier should be irrelevant, as the parents work obviously, and the children are required to attend school legally.
