However, the tennet, also signed the entire lease. So I'm a little confused. I always thought a signature on the lease pretty much indicates he/she agrees to everything on the lease????

When there is an automatic renewal clause, Your State law requires that a line/place for the tenants signature, initials, mark, etc. to be placed beside the automatic renewal clause. Without the tenants signature, mark, initial, etc., the automatic renewal clause can not be enforce. Does not matter if tenant signed the lease itself.
