Utility billing

Its been almost 3 weeks since my renter has vacated the property and I moved in. I recently have been getting his mail without a forwarding address. One day I opened up one of the utility bills on accident thinking it was mine, and noticed a 1,300 gas and electric bill that has been delinquent for quite some time. I know from my water district that his late bill for water is assessed to my taxes. Is the gas and electric the same where his old bill is now my new bill?

Hopefully you got a final meter reading on the gas and electric. I just sold a house and the previous tenant had a final meter reading done before she moved out. The house was vacant for 3 weeks before we went to settlement. I called the gas/electric company to get a meter reading but somehow they used the prior tenant's estimated reading and not the actual reading so now I have an enormous bill for 3 weeks of a vacant house. I have been arguing with them for months and they just put it into collections even with all the records I have of phone convos, etc. So make sure that you are not stuck with your prior tenant's bill. Do what you can now before it goes to collection.

Best response is to ask the utility company. How would any of us know the policy of your particular service provider?
