BEWARE of SCAMS: NEVER WIRE MONEY
by John

I just had a call from a very nice young lady who just drove to NYC from Chicago to move into her new apartment.
She answered a Craigslist ad for the apartment and over the last week, spoke multiple times to the scammer who was posing as the landlord. He had her wire money to him and told her that he would not be able to access the money until she gave a "security code" in person. Unfortunately, no showed up to meet her, his phone was no longer active. Very sad. Nice girl. NEVER wire money.

Nice girl but clearly dumb. You never wire money to a person you have never met before without some assurance that the other person is legit. Its sad, but it was her fault for not demanding to meet this person first before sending money.

Sort of the opposite of Nigerian scammers who contact landlords with lengthy misspelled emails that they are coming to the States from France/Japan/wherever and they want to pay more than what is due (and receive back a portion)...

It was upsetting because she was a nice innocent kid - who realized she messed up, but trusted the wrong person. She learned an expensive lesson. Never wire money.
Key red flag words: Craigslist, wire money.
