Re: Internet service providers and tenants! by Anonymous on June 16, 2012 @20:33

We had a tenant install that same internet service. It also gave them TV and phone service as well with the box if they chose for that bundle. She asked permission and it was installed in our garage (2 family home). It's not the sleekest thing in the world. When the tenant left, the box remained. We unplugged it because the next tenant chose a different provider.

Fast forward a few years. A subsequent tenant decided to use the same service and Verizon used the same box they installed and just had to program it and hook up the tv and computer, etc.

Here's the thing. It's kind of a big box. Considerably bigger than your average modem or router u are usually used to seeing which is about the size of a paperback book. It's ugly as well because of it's size. So, you may wish to have them mount it in a closet or in a corner somewhere not readily visible. Incidently, they can put the box outside the apartment or even outside on the side of the building but that would require more wiring and probably more extensive alteration outside in order to mount it and protect if properly from the elements.

If you are worried about the equipment being removed after the tenant leaves, you can add an amendment to the lease that the tenant's would be responsible for the cost it would take to have the box removed and any resulting damage to the wall (holes, etc) repaired. Or, if you like the placement, you can leave it be for future tenants to use if they happen to chose Verizon. You would be able to advertised that it's wired for it.

Thank You. You gave a really helpful answer. Here is my concern...with each internet provider does a new "set up" need to happen? I would hate to think of having an ugly box for each provider and not being able to get rid of it.

The Verizon guy yesterday said the box is worth $6,000! And they won't take it away??? If they won't remove it and I want it gone will they come after me?

I just hate this and hate dealing with this industry because of this bull.

I wouldn't allow a $6000 piece of someone else's equipment in one of my units unless I had a waiver from the owner of the equipment (Verizon) that I am not responsible for it and that, with xx days notice to them, I can and will remove it & dispose of it myself.

that said, I don't believe the Verizon guy - no way does a cable box cost $6000 for every house they put one into - they would NEVER recoup their money, even at the outrageous prices charged just to watch television.

I am not aware of other service providers that use the type of box/set up Verizon does. The cable companies set up the services the same way they do for tv service and just provide a tabletop modem to connect to the computer or wireless router.

I saw some of your other responses to posters and one mentioned reviews of Verizon you found online. I have heard some things about them but they have usually been because of pricing changing from statement to statement and customer service issues. I have a close friend that has Fios and he loves it. He didn't have a problem with the install and hasn't had an issue with service. He only has the internet option and not the TV or telephone package. The box was put in the corner of a small pantry room.

I would call them and create a "story" that you just moved into a home and have this ugly Verizon box mounted inside and you want to remove it and want to know if you will be penalized in any way. Either way, have the tenant be responsible for the removal. Their name is going to be on the Verizon contract not you so I think the equipment would be theirs to deal with financially just like a cablebox would be.
