I rent a place near a golf course. Today, my tenant called to report a golf ball had come through the window. He wants to know when I will be over to replace it. Who should pay?

Be sure to report the accident to the golf course so they can take steps to prevent repeats. The course may have insurance that might cover this incident.

The golf course should have people on staff to handle that. They do at the condos next to courses up near me (my dad has lived at 2 different ones!). Call the course and report the incident. They can probably have a handyman there in an hour.

The gold course should pay directly or you need to fix it and get reimbursed from the golf course. This isn't your tenant's responsibility unless they were the ones swinging that golf club which they were not.
Either way, the window has to be fixed sooner rather than later. Call the management or owner of the course and explain what happened. Most likely they will tell you to have it replaced and send them a copy of the bill so they can reimburse you. That is is what happened on our property with the municipal building next door was remodeling the roof and a piece fell off and bent a portion of our fence. The contractor doing the job just needed the bill from our fencing company and cut a check the next day and had one of the workers deliver it with an apology.

Golf courses are under no hard and fast rule to replace your window. I was a head golf pro for 15 years and one course I worked at replaced windows as part of the rules since all homeowners were golf club members as part of the community. One club didn't and said all home owners assumed that risk. We asked all golfers to do the right thing and aided all homeowners in getting contact information if needed, but the course was in no way responsible to repair the window.
All the houses knew what that rule was when they bought the house. When your house backs up to a golf course, you should probably have that question answered before you buy. Check with the course head pro (not the person who answers the phone. They're likely summer help and know little about policies.) and go from there. I know a lot of homeowner insurance covered this for owners who couldn't say what group broke their window.
