eviction by Brandy (Wa) on July 18, 2012 @14:06

I am a 72 yr old grandmother who is raising her 2 great grandsons. My son is in prison for a false charge and their mom is a drug addict who cant raise them. I have applied and will be recieving funds from DSHS starting Sept. In the meantime I do not have the funds to pay Aug rent. I was told by the neighbor that in Wa state they can not evict a grandmother and grrandchildren. If the LL would wait until Sept 1st I can pay both months. Im not asking for a hand out but a hand up so to say. Where can I get elp ?

Your neighbor is incorrect. Any person, regardless of age or family composition, can be evicted for nonpayment of rent.

Try looking within your town's or county's social services or housing authority. Some offer rental assistance to help when individuals are facing eviction or homelessness but are waiting for benefits to kick in.

Try to work something out with the landlord.

Be upfront about what is going on and what you are going to do to fix it. Offer to pay what you can now.

Best of luck,
Greg in Phoenix

Talk to Salvation Army, they can give you references to community and church groups who provide emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities, usually on a one-time basis. So what have you been paying rent with up to now? Why can't you pay the August rent with the same funds you always have used? You should be on foodstamps, too, if your income is limited, that way you don't use the rent money to buy food.
