Lock Change

In my research I'm seeing that in IL, we are required to change locks between tenants if the County has a population of 3 million. Mine (Kane)is less than that population. If anyone knows different, let me know. I'll likely go ahead and do it because I can see the safety concerns but I was wondering the thoughts of other LL's on this matter.

If the county had a population of 50 people you should still change the locks. Do you want the tenants to come back, steal everything and trash the place? Do you want squatters to move in?

The exterior door locks should always be exchange between each new tenant occupant, for safety and security. The landlord can either purchase a brand new lockset or interchange (mix) existing locksets between different units, preferable at different locations.

There's probably a high degree of liability associated with not changing locks between tenants, especially if you don't tell the new tenants.
