Do you have a written notice from the landlord that states you needed to vacate by the end of April?

The state law requires the notice be in writing. Either your notice (must be for 30 days or one full rental period) or the notice from the landlord.

If you have it in writing from the landlord...tell the landlord that end of April is quite legal and you will be out by then.

I think that without it in writing you have stuck for May. In that case: PUT IT IN WRITING, now for the end of May.

You are looking to the wrong person to blame your troubles on. The person responsible for your mess is in jail. This always happens when a person with good credit exposes its use to those with bad credit. One soon learns why the bad credit exist.

Live and learn.

Work with the landlord. Call him. Tell him the place wil be cleaned out by the end of the month. Then get it cleaned out. Ask to meet the LL when the place is cleaned out, and make sure he has the key to enter the place. Stay and clean whatever he says is not clean. Take a few pictures when you have the place ready to hand back to him.
LL broke the lease, tell him you assumed he did not need a thirty day notice if he was the one that ended the lease. It sounds to me like he is not sure you will have the place cleaned out and cleaned up by the first of April. Probably because he sees no effort of it being done so far. Let him know you will be cleaning the place out as soon as the court makes its decision. If your nephew still has the key to the place, you need to get it back or someone needs to change the locks with a 24 hour notice on the door that the locks are being changed....to protect both the LLs interests, as well as your interest, which is getting as much of the security deposit back as possible.
The landlord might not know your intentions, because he has been dealing with your nephew.

So is the electricity off? If so everything in the fridge is going bad and creating a mess and a smell. That will eat up the deposit and any overages will be placed on you too.
