Do you have a written notice from the landlord that states you needed to vacate by the end of April?

The state law requires the notice be in writing. Either your notice (must be for 30 days or one full rental period) or the notice from the landlord.

If you have it in writing from the landlord...tell the landlord that end of April is quite legal and you will be out by then.

I think that without it in writing you have stuck for May. In that case: PUT IT IN WRITING, now for the end of May.
