The best way to store move out photos

We refunded only 25% of the security deposit to a difficult tenant. The state of California allows a tenant four years to dispute the return of the security deposit. (what a stupid law!) I have the move out photos stored on a CD and also a zip drive. Should I print them out also?

How many photos are you talking about? A print out would be a good back up if you may need them 4 years later. What you really need is a good plug and play hard drive. Disk become corrupted. Keep another copy back on your PC hard drive. Zip drives may be abandoned in the coming years.

I made the mistake of putting all my photos on a pin drive and did not have them on any other form of back-up. I had my computer on my lap and the pin drive hit the couch arm and bent the pin drive rendering it unaccessible. Follow the advice that has been given so you don't have to learn the hard way...

I already subscribe to a photo website (Smugmug), so I upload my photos and store them there as well. That way if my hard drive and my back up drive drive crash, I have them on someone else's server.

You know what? I may be old fashioned, but you should print 1 set out on paper , regardless of how else you store them. Printed pictures will never go out of fashion, and they last "forever". I agree, you can lose them , just like CDs , etc. But there are pictures out there from even before the Civil War, that are over 150 years old.

I take my digital card out of the camera, and print them at the local CVS.
They go into the folder I keep for that tenant along with all the copies of the leases (if more than one year), originals of the receipts, bills for repairs, letters, etc.
Once the folder is a year old without any activity...it moves into the archive. After 10 years in the archive it is shredded.
