Replacing a bathtub - Landlord Forum thread 317830

Replacing a bathtub by Micah on April 23, 2014 @08:21

I gutted one apartment and need to put in a new tub with shower enclosure. I was considering using a steel tub since it's lighter than the cast iron but stronger than the fiberglass... Anyone have any experience with the steel tubs?

Basically I'm afraid of chipping and rust...

I've seen some commentary that people like the Bootzcast or Americast. Has a lot of the advantages of cast iron without the weight.

The porcelain on steel tubs is thinner and more subject to chipping. Check out Ebay for a tub.

About four months ago we had our home tub, steel and some bad rusted parts, refinished for $425. Looks new; We like it. In a rental I would try the same. I think it was called tub refinishing.
Replace the tub and you are into tile work, maybe floor work, tub cost, plumbing maybe different connections. I had to replace an oversize tub in a rental that was badly cracked the whole bottom about 4-5 years ago and it turned into a bathroom remodel almost. I did get an estimate from a tub refinisher then but he was jerking me around with different prices and scenarios, hard to schedule, and I didn't trust him. In retrospect I may have used him.
