I agree. If you are going to hang onto these reports they should be kept in a locked file cabinet, and in an organized way so that you can find them later.

This is a good reminder. I should get some documents over three-years old shredded. I think in CA three years is our limit on saving things like credit apps.

I'm still not sure legally how long I need to keep the applications from the rejected applicants. It seems unlikely to me that someone could come back and make a successful fair housing claim 1+ years later but I don't know what the law is on this.

Ok....I guess you guys didn't run up against the fair credit reporting act....passed a couple years back.

You cannot get credit reports without first showing proof that you are a legitimate business with a legitimate business need....then...you have to stand for an audit. A physical audit. Someone comes to your place of business and verifies that your records are kept secure and any computers that have this info on them are also secure. Not just from misc. people who may wander through...but..even from you employees who may otherwise have a legitimate need to be on the computer. They want to see locked cabinets. Locked safe with record kept there. And locked doors on the office.

Since I want access to the actual credit report...I will not take anyone's word for the "risk level" .... I must pass through this audit every couple of years.

I had that audit done years ago.

I think the audit is just a CYA for the government and the credit agencies. There really is nothing to prevent someone from being sloppy and careless with credit reports even if they've had that audit done.
