Unless the tenant was always in a hurry to get you the rent you should not be in any particular hurry to get the deposit out.

OP doesn't say anything about prorating a deposit. They are talking about prorating rent.

I was confused also, I thought he meant "and we are trying to fix that" that he meant something to do with the security Deposit which isn't prorated.
As soon as rent is a day late I e-mail and "remind" tenant about the rent -- I don't want things to extend on to be a problem.
