Maybe whoever lived there when the utility room was built, buried a body there and built the utility room over it to cover up the crime. j/k

I also have a keen sense of smell and pick up things my husband swears he can't smell.

We've thought the same thing. We had a tenant there for many years and noticed the smell after he left suddenly when given a notice to end tenancy. If there was ever anyone who I could imagine having murdered someone it was him. We make jokes about finding his buried bodies. I've tried every air freshener made, I've tried opening the scented oil refills and pouring them onto the wood floor, I've capped an old plumbing pipe that was once there, we believe in the 1930's that room used to be the kitchen and the smell is still there. I keep the door shut to it so the smell doesn't go into the rest of the house, it's isolated to that one room. It's similar to what an old fishing bait tackle box smells like
