Lease - Landlord Forum thread 321998

Lease by Mary Smith (Texas) on July 29, 2014 @09:56

When does a landlord need to give a tenant a copy of lease? Lease was signed 3 months ago, and property is still being built, however, landlord never gave tenants a copy of lease and is stating they can get one when they pick up the keys. VERY CONCERNED

I have 2 copies of the lease at the lease signing, everyone including me signs both copies, one I keep, the other the tenants keep, everyone has an original copy of the lease at that time. I don't have to remember to scan, copy, or email the original later...It is everyone's right to have a copy of what they have signed.

I'm more concerned that a person would sign a lease when the place is not built. A holding deposit maybe, but an actual lease? In any event, I assume the lease does not go into effect until the premises are occupied.
