It could be correct. These deadbeats could also win an award in court greater than the deposit.

Not all states allow unpaid rent to be deducted from the deposit.

Ohio law allows unpaid rent to be deducted and allows double damages in court. I don't know if this would apply to you.

New York allows unpaid rent to be deducted from the deposit.

Massachusetts allows unpaid rent to be deducted from the deposit.

Florida allow unpaid rent to be deducted from the deposit.
