using TheWorkNumber.com to verify employment? - Landlord Forum thread 322064

using TheWorkNumber.com to verify employment? by Anonymous on July 30, 2014 @10:17

I've had a few applicants whose employment cannot be verified unless I go to a website called theworknumber.com. (Citibank is one) Enrollment in this is $35 and I was wondering if anyone here has had to use it…
Thanks...

I haven't had to use it so far. I read the wiki on it and the wiki stated it cost up to $25 per verification. And the wiki mentioned the way it is set up, there is no natural cost control because "the two parties that make up the vendor/client relationship have no motivation to control these cost increases. The employees and creditors who are using the Work Number to verify employment are paying this fee, and neither have a voice as to whether or not the fee is too high, or if the price increases are reasonable."

The wiki also mentioned that some consumers have complained that database is inaccurate, for example, their titles are outdated or otherwise their work history otherwise misrepresented. The wiki also mentioned the problem of some employers making use of The Work Number as the exclusive means for employment verifiers to receive information about an individual's employment.

I'm glad I haven't run into this yet. I'm going to have to consider how to deal with this so that the prospective tenant bears the cost. If I have to pay that much money (the enrollment fee of $35 and up to $25 per individual per verification) just to verify employment there won't be anything left of the application fee to cover the credit check!

How have you handled the fee? Do you pay it or do you require the person applying to pay it?

Ever since I ran into this unreasonable fee I added a statement to my application that the tenant, not me, is responsible for paying the $35.00 fee. I have never had to use it.

I worked for the federal government and they had a number that I cannot remember that businesses used to verify employment and salary.
