perhaps it's just me but I do not ever feel intimidated by tenants. I would want to meet to get those keys back ... it's cut, it's dried, it's over. If you tell them to put them on the counter top and lock the door, what if you go over and they haven't done so? How many times have we seen landlords post that tenants have changed the locks and they can't get in? what if yuo go over and the doors are hanging wide open and there is damage?
Go over, meet, get the keys, lock up yourself and move along ... less than 5 minutes ... no need to rehash whatever had been going on previuosly.

I would try not to meet in person with someone I'd had problems with. If they can close lock the door behind them and leave key on counter - that's the way I would deal with it. If not, I would take someone with me and pick up the keys. When my tenant (who was fine) left - because they weren't sure exactly when they would finish up loading the truck - I just had them put the keys on the counter (they could close door and would lock). That worked out fine.
