Water charges - Landlord Forum thread 323007

Water charges by Steven M. (NY) on August 18, 2014 @08:17

Am I allowed to add water charge in the Lease Agreement on a 2 family house with one meter in NYC.
I have rented previously to 2 people and live in the other apartment and again we are 2 people.
I have divided the yearly bill in half and then I have divided by 12 for monthly additional rental fees. Am I allowed to do this if it is in the lease agreement and only one water meter in NYC?

Some areas have a shared meter law which is meant to comply with town codes against illegal rentals.
In my legal 2 family homes, (If there is one meter) I allow them to split the water bill between the tenants.

Why not just charge enough rent to cover it?
