I agree with Kim that you are very lucky the situation wasn't far worse, and you should pay the vet bill.

I highly recommend the d-con "No View, No Touch" traps. We live in the country and occasionally need them in the garage. The mouse goes inside the trap to get the bait, then when the "Mouse Caught" indicator shows, you just pick it up, bag it, and throw it away.

Yep, that's what we use. I couldn't think what it was called.
