How to collect judgment? - Landlord Forum thread 325081

How to collect judgment? by Anonymous on September 30, 2014 @12:39

Does anybody know a law firm in CO - or elsewhere, for that matter - that would buy a judgment? I had a tenant whom we have a judgment against, over $11,000. It was willful destruction of our rental, and the tenant was evicted. That was some 7 years ago. The judgment is registered at the court house, and I had it re-registered this summer. We hoped that he would come back and at least negotiate payments... We won the judgment, but the tenant just disappeared from the surface of the Earth. I think he works for cash only, so he can't be tracked. I would gladly sell the judgment for half of its value. Half in my situation is better than nothing. If only there was someone who wanted to track that gentleman down and make him pay...

can I trade in my 11,000 shares of WCOM stock for your judgment?

If you have all the information on the location, bank accounts, employers, etc..then maybe you can find a collection agency that might take it for pennies on the dollar......but even then..not too likely

The thing is...deadbeats are very hard to find and collect against. Collection agencies (and law firms now too) know that it will probably costs them more to chase deadbeats then they will ever collect. AND, once they have found them...all that happens is they quit their jobs and now the skip-tracers have to start all over...which costs more money again.

Sadly...you will probably not be able to collect anything.

The only way to protect yourself against this kind of thing is to be very, very careful who you rent to. Never accept anyone who is substandard ...no matter what the sob story is.
