Can you metal detect applicants? - Landlord Forum thread 325109

Can you metal detect applicants? by Anonymous on October 1, 2014 @01:13

I lost a judgement against an undesirable because he wore a recording device during his tour of the property and used it as evidence of me discriminating. So am I allowed to require applicants to be screened for recording devices? Can I also put terms in a lease that prohibit tenants from photographing my property with the intent to defame? There is a very rabid tenant association in my city full of SJW-types that keeps an active record of every little problem with every rental property trying to shame landlords out of business. I heard there is a law now where you aren't allowed to photograph inside meat factories with the intent to defame and it sounds pretty similar to photographing rental units.

Why would you be descriminating to start with? Getting caught should make you relize how costly it is to do so, but here you are asking for advice, so you can prevent someone from catching you again! Maybe you should be out of the business...

Whats next, strip search being required of each applicant! STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. You will soon be back in court facing a much bigger judgement!

You lost in court because you WERE discriminating against someone and a third, impartial party (the judge) said so. Instead of you asking us to help you find ways around discrimination laws, you should spend many, many hours reading up on the laws, and then FOLLOWING them. Whoever took you to court, knows the laws better than YOU do. That should be the other way around.
